This is one of a number of really fascinating antique 19th Century and slightly later fine porcelain hand painted oval and circular plaques. Cameo - Portrait roundel & ovals. I am not sure of the country of origin but I would think they are from Europe somewhere possibly England but more like French. They are classic CAMEOS with really fine detail and some look to be hand painted and others are possibly underglaze transfer print. Some are much older than others and some are on a finer porcelain. Some have paint numbers on the back and some have the last collectors pencil numbers on the back. Side profile as well as front portrait bust profile. I cannot determine what they are from or their function... maybe just decorative cameo mounts - fittings from furniture, caskets, boxes, mirrors, jewellery brooches or similar items. They could also be Grand Tour souvenirs bought by the rich aristocratic tourists of the period for them to collect and display in their cabinets or to be mounted in frames on the wall as furnishings. Rather like they did with the plaster Classic Roman Greek " tassie " and medal mouldings you find - these being more up market though in my opinion. They are slighty domed in shape and not flat. You will see there are a few of the same shape and style but with a different portrait Cameo on them so they may well have been made to be collected as sets or to be fitted around a large ormolu table casket. I really do not know what their purpose was but I do know they make a fabulous collection theme now. I cannot find anything similar on google. They are all different and I have no duplicates. They are really fabulous and worthy of being in a serious private collection or museum display alike. This one is circular and it has a cameo facing forward - possibly a Mythical creature or Pointy ears gent. The main ground is brown with orange, green, white, and gilt borders. In very nice overall condition. A few surface scuffs on his nose. There are a few tiny nibbles on the bottom edge. It measures approx. 32mm in diameter x 8mm deep. which is 1 and 1/4 inches in diameter x 1/3rd inch deep.
